Initially known for its bite-sized 15-second clips, TikTok gradually extended its video length to one minute, three minutes, and then five minutes. In February 2022, it further expanded the limit to 10 minutes. Now, in a bold step to keep its user base engaged, the platform is aiming to test the boundaries further with a potential 15-minute video option for all users.
The news was first shared by Matt Navarra on Threads (X rival by Meta). According to the screenshot that was shared, selected users can upload longer videos to the platform from both the TikTok app and desktop.
This strategic move is a clear indication of TikTok's ambition to compete head-on with YouTube, a dominant force in the realm of long-format video content. Interestingly, TikTok's Chinese counterpart, Douyin, had already upped the ante by allowing 30-minute video uploads last year, indicating a trend towards longer video formats within the realm of short-form video sharing.
