The Guardian to Launch European Edition in Autumn

The Guardian has exciting news for its readers across Europe and beyond. In autumn 2023, the media company will be launching a new digital European edition, becoming the fifth edition following its successful UK, US, Australia, and international editions. This expansion aims to provide its dedicated English-speaking audience with a uniquely-Guardian perspective on Europe and global affairs.

To bolster its coverage of the region, the Guardian has announced ten new editorial roles. These roles will complement the existing network of European correspondents and cover various crucial topics. The editorial team will now include a Scandinavia correspondent, several new editors, a community affairs correspondent, as well as specialist reporters for environment, culture, and sports. This move will deepen the Guardian's reporting on Europe, spanning a wide range of countries, including Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Russia, Ukraine, Eastern, and Central Europe.

Among the appointments, Lizzy Davies takes on the role of European news editor, leading the Guardian's coverage of news and current affairs in the region. She will be supported by a team of digital editors, including Harry Borg, Alessia Manzoni, Lucy Campbell, and a dedicated European live blogger to deliver real-time coverage of major events on the continent.

Furthermore, the Guardian's new Europe edition will introduce Miranda Bryant as Scandinavia correspondent, Ashifa Kassam as community affairs correspondent for Europe, Ajit Niranjan as environment correspondent, Philip Oltermann as culture editor, and Nick Ames as European sport correspondent. These seasoned journalists will bring their expertise to cover diverse topics, from politics and climate issues to cultural trends and major sports events.

Katharine Viner, Editor-in-Chief of Guardian News & Media, expressed the Guardian's commitment to reporting on Europe and its unique appeal to readers seeking a fresh perspective. The move aims to provide clarity on important issues such as the climate crisis, technology, migration, and events like those in Ukraine.

The expansion comes as European readers have become the Guardian's most engaged audience group outside the UK. The Guardian has witnessed significant growth in its European audience, with a substantial increase in average monthly page views and nearly 25 million monthly unique browsers. This expansion reflects the growing demand for trusted, independent English-language news that connects with European readers.
